Cats are subtle communicators. Once you know what to look for, their body language tells you a lot about how they're feeling.

Signs of a happy cat

  • Slow blinking: often called a "cat kiss". Try slow-blinking back.
  • Tail held high: especially with a small curve at the tip, it usually means a friendly, confident cat.
  • Kneading: pushing paws rhythmically into a soft surface, a sign of comfort.
  • Purring while relaxed: often a sign of contentment.
  • Head bunting: rubbing their head or cheeks on you to share their scent.
  • Sleeping in open spaces or lying belly-up, which shows they feel safe.
  • Playing and exploring with curiosity.
CarefulA cat showing its belly often means trust, not "please rub my tummy". Many cats dislike belly rubs.

Signs of a stressed cat

  • Hiding more than usual
  • Ears flattened back or sideways
  • Tail tucked or rapidly swishing
  • Dilated pupils in normal lighting
  • Over-grooming, sometimes causing bald patches
  • Going to the toilet outside the litter box
  • Eating much less, or hissing and swatting

Common causes of stress

Moving home, new pets or people, loud noises, changes in routine, or a dirty litter box can all upset a cat.

How to help

  • Provide hiding spots and high places to climb.
  • Keep a consistent daily routine.
  • Offer daily play sessions.
  • Keep food, water and litter boxes in quiet areas.

When to see a vet

Sudden behaviour changes can sometimes be caused by pain or illness. If your cat stops eating, hides for long periods, or changes its toilet habits, contact your vet.
